When applying for a job, the list of requirements can be, to say the least, intimidating. We often talk to candidates about jobs they don’t think they’re right for. Quite often, a job will have some requirements that can’t be changed. For example a chemist, this is usually work experience in industry with a relevant technology. Without work experience, it can be hard for recent graduates to get their foot in the door, but more and more companies are willing to invest in and train graduates. Do Candidates Need a Qualification?
Most sales jobs focus on a certain market, and even if you only sell one product or service, you’ll need to know a lot about that market. Companies need to know about their customers’ needs, their products, and their competitors in order to “hit the ground running” and keep their place in the market.
For example, is a degree in chemistry or any other degree important for a job in sales? No, is the short answer. Smart, motivated people can pick up key information quickly and do well in a technical sales role with the help of a good technical manager.
The Essentials for a Candidate
Language fluency can be a must-have, and you will usually be expected to be able to read, write, and speak a language. A native speaker is often on the interview panel, so even a crash course won’t be enough to improve “holiday” language skills enough. Not just sales jobs need a driver’s licence. Some businesses are in rural areas that aren’t served by public transportation, so if you don’t live close enough to walk, you’ll need a car. We are always surprised by how many people who live in a different country apply for jobs that aren’t in their home country.
If you can’t get to the job site or office, it’s unlikely that a client will look at your application. But if you can move and have the right to work, you should start talking.
